What to do at 10,000 feet

The Alpine Loop is one of the densest concentrations of high-country recreation in the Lower 48. Champion Lode puts you in the middle of it.

Hiking

Three 14ers from the door

The cabins sit in a corner of Colorado where 14,000-foot peaks are an ordinary day hike. Three of the state's classic 14ers — Handies, Redcloud, and Sunshine — all start within a short drive of the property, and the country in between is laced with high-alpine trail.

  • Handies Peak — 14,058'
  • Redcloud Peak — 14,041'
  • Sunshine Peak — 14,007'
  • Continental Divide Trail, Burrows Park trails, and dozens of alpine lakes

Mountain Biking

The Alpine Loop & the Alpine 50

Champion Lode sits directly on the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway — a world-class high-alpine ride that crosses two passes above 12,000 feet. It's also the host route of the Alpine 50, the highest-elevation one-day mountain bike race in the United States.

  • Cinnamon Pass (12,640') and Engineer Pass (12,800') from the cabin
  • Singletrack and high-country doubletrack in every direction
  • Host course of the Alpine 50

Mountain & Ultrarunning

On the Hardrock 100 course

The Hardrock 100 — one of the most respected 100-mile mountain races in the world — passes within a mile of the cabins. Whether you're training for it, crewing it, or just want endless vert above 10,000 feet, the property is a basecamp for the kind of mountain running this range is famous for.

  • Hardrock 100 course passes within ~1 mile of the cabins
  • Continuous trail above 10,000' for altitude and vertical training
  • Hut-to-hut style routes between Silverton and Lake City

Hunting & Fishing

Deer, elk, and the Lake Fork

Healthy populations of mule deer and elk move through the area year-round, and the Lake Fork of the Gunnison plus nearby Cooper Lake offer accessible high-country fishing. Hunters should consult Colorado Parks & Wildlife for unit boundaries, season dates, and license requirements.

  • Mule deer and elk on and around the property
  • Fishing on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River
  • Cooper Lake nearby

4WD & OHV

The Alpine Loop from your driveway

The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway runs straight past the property, connecting Lake City and Silverton over Cinnamon and Engineer Passes. It's one of the most celebrated 4WD and OHV routes in the country — and you start it without ever loading the truck.

  • Direct access to Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass
  • Jeep, side-by-side, and ATV terrain
  • Outfitter rentals available in Lake City
